David's Words and Sounds

The poignant end of an era, as reflected by the removal of "David's Words and Sounds" from the side bar of our blog. Details follow for the dedicated David devotees (i.e., grandparents and GG).

3 June: David soared past the 150-word mark as he approached 18 months of age, and now they are coming so quickly we are finding it too hard to keep up with him! Here are the final noted acquisitions as jotted down in my planner:

Recent to 5/13/08: medicine, pillow, flowers, panda, sheet, horse, piece (of a puzzle), tails, paste (toothpaste), matoes (tomatoes), beans, pears, peas, hoo-hoo (as in “yoo-hoo” from the book Elephant’s Big Ride)
Recent to 5/16/08: nose, toot toot, ding ding, owl sound (hoo-hoo), backwards, Rusty (book character of a dog), moo, buzz, surl (squirrel), dow (down)
5/18/08: labulas (ambulance), turtle, flush, potty, lunch (the last 3 he has had for a while), high chair
5/19/08: muffin, socks, shower, mouse
5/20/08: sit, see (both a few days old) (“See” is really cute, he says it when he wants to see laundry or cooking and needs to stand on a chair or be held to see), boom (don’t know if on list but ages old), hopper
5/21/08: pid (pig), please (a while now), tacktor (tractor), rice, barley
5/22/08: dishes, see it (w/ shake head no means “can’t see it”), lobsters
5/26/08 (many over the Memorial Day weekend to NY): trolley, Marma (Grandma), love you, night night (those two he has had a while), much (in Guess How Much I Love You), reach (also in that book), strawberries (very clear now!), buberrs (blueberries), baberrs (blackberries), cheerios, cereal, milk, steps, out, scooz (excuse – to be excused from the table - super cute), side (outside), march, switch, stuck, GG, share, doctor, peach, vacuum, orange juice, said “ap juice empee” at lunch (apple juice empty)
5/29/08: pairing words more often now such as “Nee shower” when he hears Renee taking a shower, "no touch" with a waggling warning finger to boot, or note the 3 word phrase above as another example

And so, at 18 months, I think we will close this list. It has been a whirlwind of verbal development and continues to be! We will still try to keep track of anything particularly remarkable or noteworthy, but from here on out, David is simply talking too much for us to keep up with his new words and still attend to the rest of our daily existence! Praise the Lord to have such a happy problem. We recognize that speech is a gift, and we're grateful God has bestowed it on David. By the way, his latest is "skeeto," mischievously accompanied by a slap on my arm, which is his way of helping me swat mosquitoes (even when there aren't any).

As for percentiles, it all balances out. While David falls near the top of the curve in speech development, he is about 4th percentile in height, weight, and head circumference. But we love our tiny talker!
